Karla requested permission to enter the office, tapping gently with her knuckles on the door. When he didn't get an answer, he opened it and went inside the room. SeaLord had given him precise instructions: once he left Miriam, he would return to the house and inform her of everything. He told her that he would wait for her in the office, which he was absolutely forbidden to access without authorization. However, SeaLord told him that he had some matters to resolve urgently that afternoon, so he was probably not there when Karla arrived. He authorized him to enter the office, ordering him to wait there for his return.

Karla had never been alone in that office. He remembered the first time he entered it, that night when he appeared before SeaLord, in response to an advertisement for a housekeeper. I was eighteen years old and wandering aimlessly, fleeing the misery of a war-torn country. SeaLord offered him work and shelter, patiently taught him a language of which he knew no more than ten or twelve words, and showed him an unsuspected world of perversion and pleasure. That was a strange place, ruled by a strange being, where strange things happened. But Karla was increasingly attracted to that man whose true name she had never known, to whom she showed absolute obedience, to whom she venerated as a teacher and as the owner of her whole being.

He wandered around the ranch, entertaining himself in reading the titles of some of the books from SeaLord's immense library. Karla had never imagined that there could be so many books referring to the sea.  He took one of them and went to sit on SeaLord's couch. He smiled mischievously. Leaning her head and back against the wide backrest, she felt for a moment that she owned it all. She looked at the drawers of the beautiful mahogany table and an inevitable curiosity took hold of it. The first two were locked. Not the third one. Karla began to open it but closed it instinctively, fearing to be discovered by SeaLord. He stood up and went to the door, slowly opened one of the leaves, only one slot, and sharpened his ear to warn of its possible arrival. There didn't seem to be anyone in the house. He closed the door and quickly made his way to the chair, sat on it and opened the drawer again. He looked at the papers inside, without taking them out.  He discovered they were the emails SeaLord and Miriam had exchanged.

He didn't have time to react when SeaLord opened the door and entered the office. Startled, Karla worried more about getting up from the couch than about closing the drawer completely. SeaLord went to her, looked at her without saying anything and noticed that the drawer was ajar. He closed it without abruptness. Karla, dazed, looked at the ground without daring to take a step.  SeaLord ordered him to sit in one of the chairs behind the table in front of him. Karla did as she was told.

- I didn't think I'd give you permission to sit on my couch, much less rummage through my drawers. SeaLord spoke to him sweetly, without stridency, apparently without anger.

- No, sir, I don't. I don't know why I did it. I didn't want to look at your stuff. I was curious and I opened the drawer. But I haven't seen anything inside - replied Karla nervously, looking down. I couldn't look at SeaLord without permission from this one.

- You know I don't like you lying, Karla. - SeaLord's voice got deeper. - And you're lying to me.

- I'm sorry, sir. It won't happen again, sir.

- You can be sure it won't happen again.

SeaLord's last words made Karla raise her head. I needed to find in SeaLord's eyes a compassionate look.  That silence hurt her more than the worst of punishments. For a moment, they stared at each other. Karla felt that look penetrate her soul and freeze her breath. He was still quiet. He didn't even reproach him for looking at him, without having authorized him to do so. Karla trembled with shame. He was aware that he had scratched his owner's trust. He should never have opened that damn drawer.

SeaLord opened the drawer and pulled out the papers. With an irritating parsimony he leafed through them, mumbling a few paragraphs. Karla saw him smile and how the smile sweetened his countenance. SeaLord left the papers on the table, took the book Karla had taken from the library and stood up. Like a spring, Karla did the same thing. She couldn't stay seated if he wasn't. He bowed his head again and stood still. She was seized by a strange, unknown, disturbing feeling. The air seemed thin and insufficient. On the inside, something was pressing against his chest and stomach.

SeaLord left the book on one of the shelves and took another.  He opened it by one of the pages marked with small cardboard indicators that protruded from the sheets. And, with a soft voice, he read aloud: "The sailors are the wings of love, they are the mirrors of love, the sea accompanies them.  And her eyes are blond the same as blond love is also, just like her eyes are. The vivacious joy that they pour into the blonde veins is also identical to the skin that appears. Do not let them go because they smile as freedom smiles, blinding light erect over the sea. If a sailor is sea, blond loving sea whose presence is canticle, I do not want the city made of gray dreams. I only want to go to the sea where I am anchored, boat without a north, body without a north, sink into its blonde light".

Karla looked at him strangely. Her eyes seemed greener and her hair blonder than usual. He smiled openly. She would have given everything to be able to kiss those smiling lips at that moment.  SeaLord closed the book, placed it on the shelf and returned it to the couch.

- Sailors are the wings of love. Luis Cernuda. Do you know the name of the book, Karla? "The forbidden pleasures." Suggestive title. - He looked at Karla tenderly as he spoke to her. - Tell me, how did everything go?

- As you ordered, sir. They must be arriving by now.

- Some kind of resistance?

- None, sir. At least not with me.

- What's she like, Karla?

- Well, sir. She is...

- Shut the fuck up! - SeaLord stopped it. Shut up, Karla. He'll be here soon. We'll go on unlocking the secrets. You're dismissed.

- As you command, sir.

Karla headed for the door. She was about to leave the room when SeaLord's voice made her stop and turn on herself.

- Ah, Karla! Get ready for punishment.

- As you command, sir.

Karla left the office and closed the door. He crossed the aisle with Miriam and the two men. Miriam looked at her but Karla did not look back. He heard a knuckle knock on the office door. He kept walking, not looking back. And he climbed the stairs leading up to his room, his eyes clouded by a cry that, bitterly, gushed from his eyes.
